How your body makes vitamin D from sun
When UVB rays from sunlight hit your skin, they trigger a reaction that produces vitamin D. The amount depends on four things: the UV index (which changes with latitude, season, and time of day), your skin type (darker skin needs more UVB), how much skin is exposed, and how long you are out.
This tool combines those factors into a qualitative synthesis likelihood — Low, Moderate, or Good. It is not a precise IU estimate, because too many variables affect real-world production to calculate accurately from a few inputs.
Skin type matters — a lot
The Fitzpatrick scale ranges from Type I (very fair, always burns) to Type VI (dark, never burns). Melanin is nature's sunscreen — it absorbs UVB before it can trigger vitamin D synthesis. So someone with Type VI skin may need 3–6 times more sun exposure than someone with Type I to make the same amount of vitamin D.
This is not a flaw — it means darker skin is naturally protected from UV damage. But it also means that at higher latitudes or in winter, people with darker skin are at higher risk of deficiency. A blood test is the way to know for sure.
Dietary vitamin D
Few foods naturally contain vitamin D. The main sources are fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines), cod liver oil, egg yolks, and fortified foods like milk, plant milks, and some cereals. The NIH recommended dietary allowance (RDA) is about 600 IU/day for adults under 70 and 800 IU/day for those 70+.
If you get little sun (live far north, work indoors, or it is winter), diet and supplements become more important. A daily supplement of 1,000–2,000 IU is common and within safe limits — but do not take megadoses. The safe upper limit for adults is 4,000 IU/day from all sources.
